Updated guidance now available!
The Forensic Network is pleased to announce the publication of the updated Guidance on Patient Referral to or within Scottish High & Medium Secure Services (2025). This revised document replaces the previous version from 2019 and reflects the latest clinical consensus and policy developments across Scotland’s secure forensic mental health estate.
Developed through extensive consultation and informed by international literature, the updated guidance provides a more nuanced framework for clinicians making decisions about the appropriate level of security for patients. It promotes consistent practice across services while recognising the importance of professional judgement in individual cases.
This guidance is intended to assist clinicians working both within and outside forensic settings, including those involved in general adult mental health services, prisons, tribunals and court services, by providing a clear and consistent framework for determining the appropriate level of security.
